Between 1776 and 1783, Great Britain hired more than thirty thousand German soldiers to fight in its war against the American rebels. Collectively known as Hessians, these troops and accompanying civilians, including hundreds of women and children, spent extended periods in locations as dispersed and varied as Canada in the north and West Florida in the south. Drawing on extensive research in private papers and official records by members of the German corps, this presentation explores the key experiences of these individuals as they waged war on a distant continent against a people who had done them no harm, with particular attention to German troops stationed in the Philadelphia region.

Lectures are FREE and open to the public. The lecture series is sponsored by a grant from the Jenkinstown Lyceum

October is National Archives Month! Come celebrate with us as the Society once again be participates in Archives Month Philly, a month-long schedule of events celebrating archives, the work of archivists, and the rich history of the area held in archives, which is being held across the Delaware Valley. 

The Society will host an Open House and book sale. The book sale will feature many out-of- print history books with local and regional titles. Tours of the archives will be conducted and refreshments will be served.

No fee to attend. Books available to purchase with cash or check.

Night of Lights will transform Chestnut Hill's main street, Germantown Avenue, between Willow Grove Avenue and Bethlehem Pike, into a vibrant four-night visual experience, illuminating local histories and architecture. Storefront windows will project videos and archival images from the Conservancy and other historical catalogues. 

Guests are invited to gather at the Chestnut Hill Conservancy, located at 8708 Germantown Avenue, beginning at 6:30PM, ahead of the annual festivities’ “Flip the Switch” opening ceremony on Friday, October 2, at 7PM.

Join historian, author, and former architect George B. Bryant on September 16 for a virtual edition of Discovering, exploring Holiday's extraordinary body of work in Philadelphia, including Chestnut Hill, Whitemarsh, and surrounding communities. Bryant draws together decades of research into the artist, his patrons, and the communities that continue to preserve his work.

Hope Lodge will be hosting on Sunday, August 2nd, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, a free, public celebration for America’s 250th birthday. This community event features a dramatic reading of the Declaration of Independence by historical actor Steven Edenbo as Thomas Jefferson, live music by the Philly Fife and Drum Company, and an ice cream social (while supplies last).
